H1N1 - Can you trust the doctors?

I hear a lot about the H1N1. Should I be worried or not? Sometimes, they are telling you not to worry about it more than you would the seasonal flu and then you hear panic in other places.

My 9 yr old daughter got sick about a month ago. Flu like symptons - sore throat, fever, stomach ache, chest congestion, coughing, etc. I spent all night watching her because they were saying not to take them to the emergency room. Took her to the doctor in the morning. They ran a flu test on her and it came out negative. They said that it would not pick up the H1N1, only seasonal flu. I asked them to test her for the H1N1 and they said they were all being told not to test for it unless they were hospitalized and to tell their patients they had an upper respiratory infection.

I made them do the test for H1N1 anyway.

It took forever to get it back (bout 4 weeks), but they finally called yesterday and confirmed that she had H1N1. They didn't give her any medication, just said wait it out. She was sick for 3 days, then her temp broke. I kept her out of school the following 2 days to make sure that she was over it. On the 5th day, her fever returned, although she didn't appear as sick as she had been at first. Her fever broke again 24 hrs later.
By the time that the test came back, she was all better. Now this is one example, but then I go into work today and a guy I work with is suddenly dead - 33 yrs old. He called in sick Monday and was dead Tuesday.
How can this not be worrisome?

  1. The CDC is now saying that there have been more than 3000 deaths from the H1N1 virus. Who knows how many more before it was reported......hospitals are not required to report H1N1 deaths unless it was a child.
